Let's accept it- we all have the one common quality. The minute we don the parent's hat- we turn into strict disciplinarians with zero tolerance. The crayons shouldn't lie scattered on the floor, they aren't supposed to jump on their chairs when doing the homework or talk to their friends during class hours. We have all insisted on such small things and hurt the little minds without a second thought.
On the road to inculcating discipline, we miss out on the small lessons that children learn from each of our frowns and harsh words. We treat our kids differently in front of others but lay strong ground rules when we are alone with them. The mistake we all make is confusing between patience and indiscipline. We make the same mistake, generations after generations and send our kids to schools and colleges that follow the authoritarian way of learning and dealing with kids. Where learning is about grades, homework, deadlines and competition- all construed as a skill to survival. Where creativity is compromised for perfection and grades. We appreciate mindfulness but have no time to practice it with our kids. Where we have time to please other people but not the ones who feed our soul.
