Meal Plan # 47: 13th – 19th August: Celebrate Independence Week With Waffles & Kathal Biryani

This week is going to be super busy with Janmashtami and Independence Day celebrations right in the beginning. Am sure a lot of you have made travel plans for the long weekend. But for those who are not travelling, life doesn't have to be boring, at least not in the kitchen. We have a celebration menu this week for everyone.

Every Janmashtami I make sure I take the kids to the mandir to see the jhankis (tableaus) that are decorated and put up in each temple here. My kids know the story of Lord Krishna now, but they still enjoy the experience of dressing up and getting to rock the swing on which baby Krishna sits.

Independence Day for my family means flag hoisting with the friends in the colony, followed by a kite flying session on the terrace. My husband loves kite flying and all the kids in the colony know he'll help get their kites in the sky. Simple pleasures that a put a smile on their face.

So in tune with the celebration theme, we have Coconut Barfi, Vellai Seedai, Appam and Singhare ki Puri on the menu. Now if you're wondering what Vellai Seedai and  Appam are, they are the favourite offerings for Lord Krishna in Tamilnadu and are made using rice flour. Appam is not the same as the savoury aappam that you would eat with stew. This is a sweet dish made with rice flour and gur- super easy recipe and yummy too!

We also have cabbage payla which is a cabbage stir fry that goes very well with rasam and rice. But if you're not a big fan of rice, it tastes as good with rotis. A tip I picked up about the cabbage payla is to make sure that the cabbage pieces are flat noodle type thick and not finely grated. The crunchy taste and the right texture add to the flavour of the dish.
