Gandhi Ashram, Sabarmati

A visit to the Sabarmati Ashram should definitely be on your list. The Ashram features Gandhiji’s life events, has a library of over 35,000 books, and a cottage by the name of ‘Hridyakunj’. Mahatma Gandhi lived 12 years of his life in the Ashram and led the historical Dandi March also known as the Salt Satyagraha from the Ashram. The Sabarmati Ashram has been declared a national monument by the government.

The Kankaria Lakefront

Kankaria lake is the biggest lake in the state and was built in 15th century by Sultan Qutbuddin and was known as the ‘Hauz-i-Qutb’. It was used for bathing by the royals and it has a pathway merging into a garden called ‘Nagina Wadi’ in the centre of the lake. The lakefront has many public attractions like a toy train, tethered balloon ride, water rides, food stalls etc.

Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden Kankaria

Patang Kite Museum

Ahmedabad is famous for its Kite Festival in India. This is the first museum of its kind in India and second in the world. The Kite Museum is located inside the iconic Sankar Kendra building. You can get to see over 125 rare and uniquely designed kites that showcase the history of kite making in Gujarat. The collection was donated by Mr Bhanubhai Shah- a kite lover who has been collecting kites since he was 21 years old. As his collection expanded, it was later converted into a museum in the year 1986.

This is an underground art gallery designed by the architect Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi and exhibits works of the famous Indian artist M.F. Hussain. The gallery is a cave-like underground structure which has a roof made of multiple interconnected domes. There are gardens and a café are located at the ground level.

Indroda Nature Park is divided into two parts on the banks of river Sabarmati and is a great location for people interested in nature and wildlife. Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple

Swaminarayan Akshardham is a large Hindu temple. It has an IMAX theatre which screens a 40-minute film portraying the country-spanning pilgrimage Swaminarayan had embarked on at the age of eleven. Another attraction for the children is the 45 minutes long laser show which also uses vibrant fire, fountain animations, water screen projections, music and live characters.
